Please see below for descriptions of our seminars.
MENTAL TOUGHNESS - COACHING RESILIENCE FOR CHALLENGING TIMES
This seminar explains what Mental Toughness is, how it can be developed and used within a coaching environment. Mental Toughness is an important new concept which describes a key factor in how we respond to stress, pressure and challenge. It is directly linked to individual and group performance, wellbeing and positive behaviours. The session describes mental toughness and how coaches can develop it with their clients.
The model identifies four important elements of Mental Toughness: Challenge, Control, Commitment and Confidence. It has its roots in two narrower concepts - Resilience and Hardiness.
Evidence shows that mental toughness is significantly and positively correlated with:
- Performance both in the individual and organisation – explains up to 25% of the variation in performance
- Behaviour – more engaged, more positive, more “can do”
- Wellbeing – more contentment, better stress management , less bullying
- Aspirations - more ambitious, prepared to manage more risk
In 2008 Mental Toughness was incorporated into the Kogan Page/ Association for Coaching book "Psychometrics in Coaching". In mid 2008 an independent study from the University of Western Ontario confirmed though an independent factor analysis that the concept of mental toughness and the core factors were valid.
In 2012 Kogan Page has contracted Dr Peter Clough and Doug Strycharczyk to write a book on Developing Mental Toughness in individuals and organisations.
Developing Mental Toughness examines how individuals respond to stress, pressure and challenge. A book for those whose role it is to improve individual and organizational performance; it details the core skills required to address these issues. For more information about this publication please see our dedicated to the Book page Developing Mental Toughness Book
The concept has a wide range of valuable and important applications for the practising coach:
- In the Workplace
- In Education and Training
- In Social and Health work
- In Sports
The Seminar will present remarkable new MRI (Brain Scan) evidence to show where mental toughness is located in the brain and what the implications are of this research.
LEADERSHIP COACHING. THE INTEGRATED LEADERSHIP MODEL – Making Sense out of Chaos.
In this session the work carried out at the University of Hull and AQR Ltd on an examination of most accepted definitions of leadership and the emergence of the integrated style of leadership will be described. The speaker(s) will introduce the coach to the integrated leadership model (2007), its structure and content and its value as a framework for assessing and developing leadership style and leadership effectiveness. It is a ‘macro’ model in that it enables the coach to take a high-level view of leadership and to work within a ‘big picture’ view. It is integrated because it integrates well with virtually every leadership model in popular use around the world – and provides context for the application of many of these models. This is particularly valuable and important for the leadership coach. There is no shortage of leadership models and many do work reasonably well, indeed. The challenge for the effective coach is to identify how to select and to use the most appropriate model or framework for each situation. This session will provide an overview of six elements in which all leadership models seem to be rooted. These describe different aspects of leadership style and enable the coach to define and assess it. It will also provide an overview of three higher-order factors that are derived from these aspects of style. These describe factors that are relevant to assessing and developing leadership effectiveness.
Workshop Objectives:
- The Integrated Leadership Model – a unique micro and macro picture of leadership style and leadership effectiveness
- Its relationship with all major leadership models
